When you are thinking about what areas in a home, the kitchen and the bathroom are typically top on the list. The bathroom is the one that is the trickiest to increase in size. Therefore, when you are considering a bathroom remodel or makeover, you may want to use designer magic. Yes, there is such a thing, that you do when remodeling, it is the smoke and mirror illusion that you are creating. You create the illusion that the space is larger without increasing the footprint. Is this a tall order to ask for a room, without opening a wall, not if you use the right design tricks to make the room appear larger.
The first thing that you should know is that the average bathroom is a 5 x 7. That means you have only 35 sq. ft of space to work with. This is really not a lot. The average bathroom ceiling is 7 ft, which is lower than the main areas which are typically 8 ft. This gives you a height challenge also. Don’t fear, there are ways around this, that do not involve putting wall to wall mirrors everywhere, which is a very dated concept.
Continuous Flooring Tile
The cabana bathroom in a home or the powder room are two popular rooms that are smaller than the average bathroom and often need help in making them appear larger. If you are doing an entire bathroom remodel and a flooring remodel in the home, use the same tile floor in the main area as in the bathroom. When you run the same flooring instead of breaking up the tile floor, it helps with the transition.
The Wall Color – Paint or Wallpaper
The first thing that you can do is to make sure that the wall color is one that is open airy and inviting. The easiest and simplest way to make your bathroom look brighter and larger is to change the paint color. Using a Benjamin Moore color such as Classic Gray or Sherwin Williams, Accessible Beige are two great neutral colors to consider. When you use a neutral color on the walls that will help reflect light, this helps to open the space, which makes it appear larger. Since it is the bathroom, the base molding is typically tile that is used on the floor. If you are using a base molding, consider painting the base molding the same color as the walls in a satin sheen, so that it will look more seamless in the space.
Designer wallpaper is another option to use in your bathroom on the walls. When you use a geometric print wallpaper on the walls, it creates an illusion of a larger space. Using a neutral color textured wallpaper will work best. Try and use colors that are monochromatic instead of dark ones to give the larger effect. When you are trying to make a bathroom feel cozy, you can use a bolder wallpaper color.
Pocket Door or Sliding Door
The door size and style matters in a small space, especially in the bathroom. When you use a pocket door in a bathroom, the door gets recessed into the wall. The hinged door takes ups more valuable space in a small area. Using a sliding door or a barn door is another concept for a bathroom. The sliding door enhances the look and it gives you more space.
Use a Wall Hung Vanity or a Pedestal Sink
The sink does not need to take up so much space in a bathroom. When you use a wall hung vanity or a floating vanity, it gives the illusion of more space. Seeing the floor under the vanity is the secret in this illusion. A pedestal sink is another option for the bathroom sink, because it takes up less space in the bathroom
Use a Frameless Glass Shower Door – Single Panel
A frameless glass shower door is definitely the way to go in a small bathroom. You do not need a large bulky frame around the shower door. A single panel glass shower door is also a great space saver in a small bathroom. You will need to make sure that you have the right shower head if you use a single panel glass shower door.
Use a Framed Wall Hung Mirror
A bathroom wall mirror is an important element in a bathroom makeover. The bathroom mirror sets the tone for the wall space and it is wall jewelry for the walls. When you use a nice size wall mirror in the bathroom it will make the space look much larger. A framed wall mirror is much better than the builders grade wall to wall mirror concept.
Use LED Lighting
Lighting matters when you are designing a small space. The lighting in the bathroom is essential to grooming in the morning. Using LED lighting helps with this concept. Adding recessed lighting that is 3 – 4 inches is the best way to light your bathroom. You should also add an LED light over the shower area in the bathroom. If you love having a light over the mirror, use a light bar instead of an up or down light fixture, it will provide more illumination in the space.
