Beautiful House Patio on a Lake During A Summer Day
As a Professional Painting company, we understand that when it comes to home makeovers, applying a fresh, revitalizing coat of paint can be transformational to a renovation project. After completing several exterior and interior paint jobs for satisfied homeowners, we always get asked to provide “Best Practices” on painting.

For a successful DIY exterior home painting project, a homeowner needs proper preparations, tools and know-how, to  beautify a home and protect it for years to come. This blog post provides a few helpful tips for the DIY homeowner interested in Exterior Painting of their home. Remember, if you are not willing to take the time, adequately prepare, use the proper techniques and purchase the proper products, you should consider hiring a professional painter to do the exterior paint job.

Preparations

The first step in the process of a success paint job is proper preparations. Exterior prep work can be labor-intensive, but if you start painting without taking the proper steps, you’re likely to get unsatisfactory results.

Washing – Paint will best adhere to your home after purging the walls of grime, mildew and excess residues. Pressure washers are one option, but in the wrong hands may do more harm than good. Instead, use this effective trio: a pump sprayer, hose and scrub brush.

Scraping – The tedious process of scraping peeled or blistered paint by hand is more effective than convenient—yet more damaging—sanders and power grinders. A heating gun will expedite the process. Should your exterior paint contain lead, you’ll need to take further precautions than simply wearing goggles and a respirator mask.

Interior Paint Color and Your Personality

When homeowners start to renovate, oftentimes the first consideration that comes to mind is paint. The color of the walls and ceiling have a major impact on the overall atmosphere, and can make or break the environment of a room. Don’t make the mistake of buying 10 gallons of paint in a color that gives your room a different, intended effect. Instead, spend some time in the space you intend to paint beforehand. What do you envision in the space? How do you want to feel in the room? Decide how you want to feel in that room, as color will play a major role in setting that mood for you.

There are an endless variety of colors to choose from, each able to evoke a certain emotion or mood. The following are a few examples of the colors available for homeowners, looking to instill their personality into a space:

Red:
Red is a bold color, meant to evoke emotions of passion and excitement. Using this color instills a room with attitude and style, which clearly displays the homeowner’s fiery personality. As a strong color, it may be hard to balance red with other colors. However, lighter, complimentary colors such as white, yellow or gray can tone down the passion that red brings.

A touch of paint colour can breathe life into a room

There's nothing like a fresh coat of paint with a bold new color to liven up a room, including a kitchen, bathroom, living room, closet or family room.  I enjoy helping clients decide on what paint colors to use for their homes.  The days of boring are over in the wake of all the splendid clor choices by paint makers such as Sherein Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, Glidden, Martha Stewart, and Ralph Lauren, among several others.

This past weekend, we started a personal paint project in our home and used Behr's online  Project Center. It was so easy and fun to use. We took photos of the rooms and uploaded them into the project center and presto, we sampled paint colors virtually on the walls.  If you haven't tried one of these paint simulators, you must go to Behr.com and try it on for size if you are considerng painting a room in your home.

I was on the internet, looking for inspiration on other style ideas and came across Canadian House and Home's Summer Paint Colours sponsored by  Benjamin Moore – Canada. I must say that I was impressed by the style gallery. The color choices were unique and unconventional, but lovely nonetheless.

After further exploring the House and Home site, I ended up on the Benjamin Moore site and came across their lovely design magazine: Nuance.  Check it out, if you are not familar with it. The Nuance magazine does a brillian job of really showing you how to ideas and commentary from several great designers.  You can view the digital version of the magazine online.  It will be a guilty pleasure, I promise you will not be disappointed.

Spice up your home with color and use one of the online paint simulators to help you along the way.  A little color does wonder for a room and your state of mind. Try it.. You will definitely breathe life into a room if you do.
